Gavin Francis Andrew

ANDREW, Gavin Francis, Sgt.

Gavin Andrew was born in Manitoba, Canada in 1894. He was son of John and Catherine Andrew of Banning St., Winnipeg, Manitoba. Gavin had 4 older sisters and one younger sister in the 1901 Census. The family were listed as Scotch Presbyterian and had a Boarding House in Manitoba with 8 boarders in 1901. Gavin was employed as a Bookkeeper and enlisted in the Canadian Field Artillery in May 1915. One of his sisters, served as a nurse at the Canadian Hospital at Orpington in Kent, England and was awarded the Royal Red Cross in 1916. Gavin travelled to England in August 1915 on the S.S. Metagama and crossed to France with the 5th Brigade in January 1916.

He was transferred to the 6th Brigade in April 1917 and promoted to Corporal in Oct 1917. The following year he was promoted to Sergeant on 4th October and went on leave. He was returning from leave in Ireland on 10th October on the RMS Leinster and died in the sinking. He was buried in the Canadian plot in Grangegorman Cemetery in Dublin.
